With summer’s end rapidly approaching, and one more holiday on the horizon, I’d like to take this opportunity to talk about creating balance by scheduling your to-do list. Whether you’re a go-getter, always on the move, or more low-key, and home bound, it’s quite common to get overwhelmed this time of year. With kids rushing off to school, and remnants of summer fun still lingering, it’s time to re-focus and get back in the game. If you are like most of us, those ever growing to-dos come with a bit of dread, sprinkled with a touch of anxiety. One of my favorite tools to deal with the onslot of work ahead, is the application of worry time for each item on my list. This simple process involves scheduling times throughout the week to tackle each item. Whether its breaking down those moving boxes piled in the garage so my husband can have his parking spot back, or finally assembling that Ikea cabinet, my list is long! By adding those projects to my calendar, I let myself off the hook a bit today. I am able to let go of the anxiety I feel every time I walk by that Ikea box, because I know I will tackle that on Sunday, at 10am, after breakfast. I’ve alleviated a lot of stress around connecting with a friend in need, because I’ve scheduled a Skype date with her on Monday night at 8pm. It is very common to get overcome by a mountain of to-do’s. We stay up late worrying about not getting it all done. Often, the stress carries over into the next day, and creates a generalized anxiety. For me, assigning time throughout the week to deal with the major dos, simply allows me to better enjoy my free time.
As Labor Day creeps up on us, I want to encourage you to pull out that to-do list, and schedule times to tackle the items on it. If you know you won’t have time to remodel the house before Saturday, perhaps, schedule a consultation with a contractor for after the holiday. Make time this week to work hard, focus and keep to your schedule. By the time Labor Day comes around, you’ll be happy and ready to enjoy it!
