Can I get an a-men for loungewear?! Seriously, there is nothing better than getting home from a tedious day of work in uncomfortable professional wear, and stepping into my spandex yoga pants. Needless to say, I am a huge proponent of loungewear, or what I like to call, “house clothes.”

But there’s something I have to admit: I went a little bit overboard with my house clothes wardrobe. I had stretch pants, leggings, pj bottoms, t-shirts and tunics taking up an ENTIRE DRAWER of my dresser. And how many of these outfits did I wear on average a week? Two. Clearly my ratio of house-wear to worn house-wear was quite large. And while I knew this fact, I felt like it was a non-issue. That was until I read Marie Kondo’s book, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, in which she discusses her clients’ tendencies to downgrade clothing they wear out-and-about that has lost its swagger to loungewear. “By god,” I thought, “she’s talking about me!” I immediately opened my house clothes drawer, and with new eyes examined my collection. What did I find? About ninety percent of my house clothes were once workout clothes, clothes I bought for a costume party, or got for free at some event. And then I thought,  “How many of these do I actually find comfortable wearing?” The answer: not many. Some were uncomfortable (like all those free t-shirts that never get soft no matter how many times they go through the wash), or unflattering (just because I’m home, doesn’t mean I want to look like a total slob).

I thinned my collection, keeping only my softest tops and least hole-y bottoms. Soon after my house clothes cleanse, I was packing for a vacation. I knew I had to go to the store to get a swimsuit for the trip, and given that I anticipated having a lot of lounging time, I decided to treat myself and buy a brand new lounge outfit. What a great gift it ended up being! I felt comfortable and put-together around fellow loungers (A.K.A. my boyfriend’s family) in my flattering new house clothes. It brought me a surprising amount of joy (it’s always the little things, huh?); so much so that when I got home and tried on my old house clothes again, I thought, “You know, I don’t feel as good in these,” and out they went!

My suggestion to you? Treat yourself the next time you need a pick-me-up, and get one great loungewear outfit and dump that collection of downgraded out-and-about clothing. You’ll be glad you did, and comfier. #loungewearforlife

This is so me! I have 3 drawers full of “house” clothes and yea…some I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing in public. (love this blog, btw, thanks to ohjoy)
